Licorice Root for Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that causes dark patches to form on the surface of skin. This condition can be burdensome for many but is generally harmless. Because there are many potential causes for hyperpigmentation, pinpointing the root and take steps to correct any dark spots you are not in love with can be a little tricky.

One of the known causes that can contribute to hyperpigmentation is genetics. Research has shown that certain genes can make individuals more prone to developing pigmentation on their skin. These can show up as large spots or smaller ones like freckles.

Another cause for hyperpigmentation is exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays. When the skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. This excess melanin can lead to the formation of dark spots that can arise as a defense mechanism. The production of melanin is a way for skin to provide protection from damage when exposed to UV rays, just like how inflammation can occur due to too much UV exposure. This is just one reason why it is important to use a broad spectrum sunscreen consistently, one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, as part of your daily skincare routine.

Two additional causes for hyperpigmentation include hormonal changes and inflammation. When it comes to hormonal changes, this skin darkening can be experienced during pregnancy or while taking certain medications. This is known as melasma or the "mask of pregnancy," and can result in dark patches on the face that typically resolve itself with time. With inflammation, it is possible for hyperpigmentation to occur as a "side effect" because more melanin is produced as a response to the inflammation. This can show up as a result of acne, eczema and bug bites or because the skin barrier is disrupted by picking or itching.

Although hyperpigmentation is harmless but many people, including myself, like to find ways to help break up the stubborn dark spots for a more even complexion. There are many ways to go about addressing this condition including the consistent use of retinol, cortisone, niacinamide, acids, lasers and antioxidants, we tend to err on the side with plant-based options in order to keep skin and the acid mantle balanced. One ingredient we formulate with to help combat hyperpigmentation is licorice root.

Licorice root, also known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, is a plant native to Europe and Asia. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its various health benefits. Licorice root contains a compound called glabridin, which has been shown to have skin-lightening properties.

Studies have shown that glabridin inhibits the enzyme that triggers melanin production in the skin, which can help to lighten dark spots and even out skin tone over time. Licorice root also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to calm irritated skin and reduce redness and help with reducing the potential for more dark spots.

Another benefit of licorice root is that it contains antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from environmental damage and premature aging. You can add this powerhouse ingredient to your skincare routine for brighter, more even-toned skin through the use of a consistent facial exfoliant. You will find this ingredient in our Bright Facial Mask and in our Pigmentation Facial Mask.

Both of these products can be use 1 to 2 times a month or even weekly when they are blended with our other facial exfoliants to create a custom mask that works to address common skin concerns.
