What are Lipids?

Jun 20, 2025

Lipids are natural fat-like molecules that are essential to both skin health and overall bodily function. Found primarily in the outermost layer of the skin, lipids include ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids which together form a protective matrix often described as the "mortar" holding the skin cell "bricks" together. This structure helps prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and shields the skin from environmental stressors like pollution, bacteria, and irritants.

A healthy balance of lipids can help keep the skin hydrated, smooth, and resilient, while a deficiency can lead to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity. This class of ingredients mimics the skin’s natural protective barrier to reinforce the lipid matrix and assists with repair and overall skin resilience. They work to replenish what the skin naturally loses due to aging, environmental stressors, or harsh products which is why they are the cornerstone of our effective skincare formulations.

When lipids are missing from product formulations, skin can quickly begin to feel dry, tight, and uncomfortable. Without these essential fats the skin barrier begins to weaken, allowing moisture to escape and irritants to penetrate more easily. This can lead to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), making the skin feel rough, flaky, sensitive or reactive, especially in harsh weather or after cleansing. This dermal dehydration can also show up as puffy or inflamed skin, especially around the eyes.

Over time, the lack of lipid support can contribute to a dull complexion, compromised elasticity, and heightened reactivity. Reintroducing lipid-rich products to your routine is the solution to help restore balance and soften texture. We recommend starting with our twice-daily cleanser and quick absorbing hydrator to reinforce skin’s ability to protect itself and retain essential moisture. Over time your routine can be modified to include fully concentrated hydrators like our Evening Rose Facial Serum, Carrot & Rose Eye Repair or Lavender Cold Cream for greater support to protect against parched skin.

We use these organic lipids in our formulations for optimal skin support.

  1. Jojoba Oil – rich in wax esters similar to human sebum; balances oil production and soothes skin

  2. Sunflower Seed Oil – high in linoleic acid; supports skin barrier and reduces inflammation

  3. Rosehip Seed Oil – contains essential fatty acids and natural vitamin A; supports skin regeneration

  4. Evening Primrose Oil – high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA); helps soothe irritated or hormonally imbalanced skin

  5. Coconut Oil – offers medium-chain fatty acids like lauric acid; antibacterial and emollient, best for dry skin

  6. Olive Oil – rich in squalene and oleic acid; deeply moisturizing, fast-absorbing and antioxidant-rich

  7. Cocoa Butter – a saturated fat that deeply hydrates and improves skin elasticity

  8. Grapeseed Oil – light and rich in linoleic acid and antioxidants; supports acne-prone and sensitive skin
