Our Favorite Adaptogens
As we discussed on our prior blog, the effects of stress on skin and the body are something that we can both see and feel when we tune in. In our modern world, stressors are everywhere which why cultivating a lifestyle to help calm our nervous system is essential for reducing this effect on our bodies and overall health. Recently we talked about the benefits of somatic stretching, incorporating meditation into your routine, prioritizing mental health and now we want to talk about adaptogens and how they can help to neutralize some of the stress our bodies feel, especially when compounded daily.
If you have not heard of adaptogens, they are a unique group of herbs and plants that help the body adapt to stressors, anxiety, fatigue and help to promote overall well-being. These natural substances work by regulating the body's stress response, helping to maintain balance and promote overall well-being. By incorporating adaptogens into your routine, you may experience a reduction in your stress level, improved energy, and enhanced resilience to life's challenges.
Adaptogens work by interacting with the body's stress response system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. They help regulate the production of stress hormones like cortisol, allowing the body to better cope with stress and maintain homeostasis.
Research has shown that adaptogens offer a wide range of benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety levels, improved energy and focus, enhanced immune function, increased resilience to physical and mental stress.
The good news is that adaptogens are pretty accessible and can be found in various forms, including powders or travel friendly capsules, teas, and tinctures. They can be easily incorporated into your daily routine by adding them to smoothies, soups, or simply taking them as a daily supplement to help your body decompress at the end of the day. Personally I take mine along with selenium and magnesium just before bed to help support a natural calm mental state as I begin to drift off to sleep.
Some of our favorites adaptogens include the following from a local company in Brevard, Gaia Herbs:
- Ashwagandha - beneficial for coping with stress
- Rhodiola - supports sustained stamina
- Cordycep Mushrooms - beneficial for increased energy and stamina
- Holy Basil - supports emotional wellbeing
It's important to note that while adaptogens can offer many benefits, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional before adding them to your regimen, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
