2 Tips for Hydrated Skin

Environmental stressors such as pollution, humidity, sun and wind exposure can all play a big role in how skin feels each and every day. By making a few adjustments to your routine now, you might find that your skin is more hydrated and protected as the weather cools and the seasons change. Preparation and consistency is key for a well-rounded routine every day of the year.

1. Incorporate a Seasonal Exfoliant

While we recommend our Chamomile & Oats Clay Facial Mask as our go-to for weekly exfoliation, we equally recommend changing things up a bit. The end of summer can be the perfect time to do so as skin can feel a little heavy, congested or gummy from cellular build up or left over remnants of sunscreen. This is where adding in a different exfoliant can be beneficial for a routine. We recommend looking for one that is formulated with plant-based AHAs and humectants to degrade the layers of buildup without causing irritation or breaking down the acid mantle.

For this step we like to recommend incorporating either our Bright, Hepburn or Pigmentation Facial Mask as your once to twice monthly exfoliant. Unique in their formulation, each mask contains plant-based acids to help reduce the gumminess of skin by softening or “dissolving” the surface layers of dead skin cells. This process helps to encourage a healthy cellular turnover and allow the new, fresh layers of skin to be visible, showing up as a plump and supple complexion.

2. Layer your Hydrators

Another way prepare skin for the cooler temps ahead while providing nutrients to repair and replenish is to layer your hydrators. Many of us prefer using a lighter product in the warmer months and a heavier one in the cooler months. The process of layering your hydrators can be beneficial to help prevent excess transepidermal water loss (TEWL) as the humidity level decreases or if your skin is naturally on the drier side.

We recommend using a facial oil or lightweight serum as your base hydrator directly onto clean skin both in the morning and evening. This product should be light enough that you can layer it under sunscreen and makeup during the warmer months and skin will feel light and happy. As soon as you notice a chill to the air, incorporate a richer hydrator on top of your facial oil or serum to help seal in the extra moisture and to provide a heavier barrier on skin.

Our facial hydrators are unique in their formulations and in how they provide protection against the elements. We love that they can be used either alone directly on skin or layered for deeper hydration and nutrients. Our tried and true lightweight hydrator is our Evening Rose Facial Serum. It provides nutrients for skin through lipids, vitamin C, ceramides and humectants. To incorporate this product into your routine apply one pump to a cupped palm and blend over face, neck and chest onto wet skin. We recommending using this base layer hydrator both in the morning and evening directly after cleansing all throughout the year.

The second hydrator we recommend is either our Lavender & Primrose Moisturizer or Chamomile Infused Moisturizer. These two products can be layered on top of our serum and are formulated with lipids and probiotics for skin health. They provide true hydration and a moderate barrier against transepidermal water loss, which is ideal in most climates. We like how easy these moisturizers absorb into skin along with a creamy texture for year-round hydration that lasts.

The last hydrator we formulate is our Lavender Cold Cream. It has a rich texture and provides a heavy barrier on skin making it ideal for cooler climates or deeply parched skin. This product contains organic lipids and two probiotics for skin health and tends to be the one we reach for when the weather shifts. The formulation is quite unique and nutrient dense but when applied to skin as dots then blended, the application is effortless and even. We recommend using this product year-round but keeping it as your once weekly hydrator after exfoliating during the summer months. During the spring, fall and winter you can layer it on top of our serum most days and nights for added hydration and protection against the changing environment of the seasons.
