Choosing skincare products can be challenging for anyone. Even the most in-the-know consumer can feel overwhelmed by the plethora of choices that are available on the market. We have compiled our go-to list of what to look for when seeking out a new routine or brand.
1.Look for Safe Ingredients & pH Balanced Products
Every ingredient counts. We recommend to use only raw, natural, non-toxic ingredients that are known to be safe and effective. Seek out products with 100% certified organic ingredients to reduce the body’s exposure to harmful pollutants. If you are not able to identity an ingredient at first glance consult a reputable source such as EWG’s Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database for the overall toxicity level.
The pH of your product is a key element of product efficacy & safety. The acid mantle maintains slight acidity as its purpose is to protect against environmental pathogens. For healthy individuals, this range should be between 4.5 and 6.5 with the ideal pH at 5.5. We recommend looking for products that mimic this pH range to reduce irritation while assisting the health and function of skin as a protective organ.
2. Don’t Hoard Products
Just like food, you want your cosmetics to have a shelf life. When formulated without petrochemicals and synthetic preservatives, plant-based ingredients will begin to oxidize when exposed to the air through normal use. We recommend to love and use your products fully before purchasing another. We like to look for multi-purpose products that can be used in a variety of ways or layered. For example, we adore our Bergamot & Lavender Body Balm as a nighttime hand and foot repair and begin to layer it on top of our favorite moisturizer during cold & windy months. We believe that all skincare products should be used within the appropriate amount of time, avoiding waste.
3. Be in Love with the Product
When testing new products, you should think about the texture, scent and application process. Only purchase products that you really love so that you will actually use it on a regular basis instead of allowing it to end up with the collection of others that didn’t fit the bill.
4. Look for Company Standards that matter to you
When on the hunt for a new brand, what company standards matter to you? Do you look for certifications including Cruelty Free, B Corp, Leaping Bunny & Certified Organic or do you care about sourcing only sustainable ingredients and non-plastic packaging? What about ingredient transparency and an ethical approach to business? These personal preferences should drive your decision on whether to support the brand or not. Look for companies that are aligned with the criteria that matters to you so you can feel good about your purchase.
